    This coin, worth 25 centavos de Quetzal (the Guatemalan monetary unit) was equal in value to the US quarter when it was issued, as the Quetzal was fixed to the dollar at 1:1 at that time.
    It is 27 mm in diameter and composed of .720 fine silver, and has a reeded edge.
    The obverse features the denomination “25 Centavos” and a bust of a Mayan woman from the town of Santiago Atitlán (today a heavily touristed, but still picturesque Tzutuji’il Maya town) lying at the foot of a soaring volcanic cone on the south shore of dramatically beautiful Lago Atitlán.
    In many traditional Mayan communities, village specific clothing identifies the wearer as a member of the community, and the headdress of the woman on the coin shows that she is from Santiago.
    The reverse side features the
    escudo nacional
    (national coat of arms) of Guatemala which consists of a quetzal bird (“bird of liberty”) perched on a scroll featuring the date Central America declared its independence from Spain (15 Sept. 1821), and two muskets with bayonets within a wreath.
