    Bay State Steamboat Company.  Organized in 1847, this company provided the first steamboat communication between Fall River and New York. The first steamer, The Bay State, commenced her trips in May, 1847 and was commanded by Capt. Joseph I. Comstock. With the steamboats in place and railroad service available between Boston and Fall River, direct service between Boston and New York was established. The became known as "The Fall River Line". The company lasted until 1863 when all it was sold to a new company, The Boston, Newport and New York Steamboat Company.
