Description
A civilized ancient Khmer art 'head of Hari' the indic deity of creation, commonly known as Vishnu, who was prominent in Pre-Angkorian Cambodia. The fragment is one of the earliest examples of sculptural art produced during the Phnom Da period in Pre Angkorian times, and is specifically characterized by its distinct features. The almond-shaped eyes with incised iris, delicately traced brows, and subtly molded lips and nose, have particularity of portraiture, an individualized treatment of the 'Phnom Da style' 8/9th century, that represents the royal patron who commissioned the sculpture. The deity's head-covering is of Indian origin, consisting of a cylindrical Mitre-type hat (the attribute of Vishnu) symbolizing the deity's exalted status. The mitre comes all the way down to the nap of the neck, and wraps his unadorned elongated earlobes, framing the face.
