    Title:
Khmer Statue of a Female Goddess, Apsara.  Angkor Wat Style 18th C. Cambodia.
    Description:
An exquisite 18th century bronze statue from Khmer mythology, depicting the Celestial Maiden 'Apsara', the female spirit of the clouds and waters, a divine courtesan engaged in a ballet-like performance called "Apsara Dance', the sacred dance of Cambodia, practiced in the courts of Angkorian Monarchs. As an important motif in Hindu and Buddhist culture, she was sent to earth by the god Indra to seduce demons and ascetics.

The goddess stands poise as a naked figure of sensuous attitude, dancing in a promiscuous way, while expressly displaying charming and contorted hand gestures. She is expressively engaged in a rhythmic nature with the right hand held to her chest performing  the 'Vitarka' mudra,  while her raised left hand shows the flexibility of her fingers in a gesture representing a tree growing leaves.
    xxx
She appears light and graceful with a sensuous figure, well defined with harmonious proportion, a naked upper body partially covered by a jeweled necklace draped with hanging pendants, her legs open, and hips covered with a short stylized sampot worn low at the waist and embellished with large rosette both at the front and the back.   Her garment is fitted with a central fish-tail panel, pending motionless, complimented by silk panels extending to both sides of her torso.
    xxx
Her face appears youthful, characterized by a seductive expression, with narrow almond-shaped eyes, ridged eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, wide lips with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes accented by Khmer style earring pendants frame her face.  Her head is covered by conical floral headdress, embellished with a large rosette and lotus petals, rising above an arched interconnected diadem, with her hair woven in tightly matted braids extending from both sides of her head like intertwining snakes.   She is further adorned with wrists bangle bracelets, upper arm cuffs, and anklets.
    xxx
The female figure has a smooth naturally aged dark brown patina peppered in mottled variations of green malachite along with embedded soil deposits from its burial environment. This skillfully executed image of a Cambodia Devi, is a superb example of Khmer artistry and its culture.
