OLD VINTAGE SUKHOTHAI & SAWANKHALOK CELADON 'LOVER FIGURE' CERAMIC STONEWARE

Description

Here is a Fine 'Sawankhalok' pottery 16/17 from the historical pottery village of Sawankhalok in northern Thailand. This couple of Sawankhalok is figurine of husband and wife, which the man hold his fighting cocks and his wife carried her baby, these are ceramic figures with a celadon glaze.  Sawankhalok and Suhokthai are best known for their traditional ceramics. It's look bulbous shape, nicely detailed and carved in relief.
The finely fractured "crackled" surface of the glaze is lightly speckled from ash residue deposits penetrating the thickly glazed surface, when fired in a low temperature kiln. This style of folk pottery made its first appearance during the late Sukhothai period of the fourteenth century, and was prominent in the ceramic trade until the sixteenth century. Influenced by Chinese potters, Thai villagers created not only items of pottery, but also architectual clay elements, and figurines of various types which rarely seen nowdaday.
